My New Years Eve in Sydney, Australia

Can you believe it’s the last day of 2016?! I sure can’t!
What are your plans for New Years Eve? This year I will spend New Years Eve with my family back home in Belgium. But for the past 3 years I have spent it in other countries. Three years ago I was in Bangkok, then Sydney and last year I was house sitting in Vancouver. I loved all three of those New Years but I have to say that New Years Eve in Sydney would be my number one.

Back in 2014 I had no idea how I was going to spend my New Years Eve but the one think I did know was that I was going to spend it in Sydney.
Just before the New Years I went on a trip with a tour company from Darwin to Adelaide. I spend my Christmas at Uluru! But besides my flight back to Sydney I had nothing planned so you can understand that I freaked out a little when I couldn’t find any accommodation in Sydney. I know, I should have known.

Luckily I was an au pair during July and August so after talking to the host mom she suggested me staying with them during that time! I know I was very lucky! During that time I made some amazing friends on my tour and it turned out that they were spending New Years Eve, with friends and family, in Sydney as well!
So on December 31st we met up at 11am to find a spot near the bridge. After debating a bit we decided to go see the fireworks at the Botanical Garden. The line was a bit long as you can see in the pictures…

In line. It actually went really quick!

I think it took us about 1 hour and a half to get through the check point. I also think we were almost the last people they allowed in the garden. After looking around for a bit we found the perfect spot. Not really for taking pictures but we decided to walk up the gate were we could see. I know my pictures of the actual fireworks aren’t that great but I did had an amazing view.
During the day they had some entertainment in the sky. Which was pretty cool but I failed at taking pictures because it was going to fast! haha.

Our spot!

Air show!

You would think that the waiting would take forever but it actually went by very quick! We talked, laughed, ate and walked around.
At 9pm you will see the first fireworks. If you think those are beautiful then the one at midnight will blow your mind! haha

New Years Eve in SydneyBefore it all starts.

I can’t describe the fireworks and the pictures don’t do their justice but I can promise you it is worth the wait! There was also fireworks everywhere, behind and next to me!

Just getting started.

New Years Eve in Sydney

New Years Eve Sydney
The grand final!
The guys I spend New Years Eve with.

To spend New Years Eve in Sydney you can buy tickets or look for free spots but keep in mind that when you are going for the free spots you have to get there early! 11am was actually too late. I went to Mrs Macquaries Point at the Royal Botanic Garden which was free but ones it’s full they close the gates.
You are allowed to bring your own sealed drinks (NO alcohol), food and of course no wapens and nothing sharp. You could also buy food and drinks (yes alcohol) there but only with cash and there are no ATM’s so bring enough cash!

How are you spending your New Years Eve? Anyone spending New Years Eve in Sydney? And of course HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Helemaal mee eens Sheila! Ik vond het ook best vreemd om kerst zo warm te vieren, haha.
