How to survive a long flight

So how to survive a long flight… Ok, I am going to be honest here. I sleep like a baby on a plane, when I got upgraded one time I was sleeping with my arms above my head and was hanging half out of my chair, I just can’t help it. When the plane is in the air I am just out.

When I flew back from Australia I knew I wasn’t going to sleep 36 hours but I have to admit I did a pretty good job!

Here are a few tips of mine to make a long flight more comfortable.

Seat
If it’s possible to choose your seat try to avoid the middle seat. It’s never fun to share your armrest for such a long flight.
Also choose a seat not to close to the toilets, because of the smell and people walking back and forth. It will drive you crazy after a while!

If you have ear trouble, like I do, I would recommend to also choose a seat somewhere in the back. For some reason your ears will hurt less.

Clothing
Wear comfortable clothes. For me this is very important because sitting in clothes that are too tight will only make the journey seem longer.
You don’t have to look like a hobo to be comfortable; you can still look cute with some comfortable pants, sneakers, socks, cute t-shirt/top and cardigan.

I always have a big pashmina scarf with me because most of the time I am cold around my neck but I also use it as a blanket or a pillow when I am on a budget flight.

Sleep
Like I said before I don’t have any problems sleeping on a plane. I put some music on, get comfortable and I am out. Sometimes I do take a sleeping pill.

For those who need complete darkness and quiet I would recommend to bring some earplugs and a sleeping eye mask.

Toiletries
Nothing is more annoying then falling asleep with your contact lenses, so if you have them take them out! But even when you aren’t sleeping it’s better to put your glasses on because your eyes will dry out or put some eye drops in.
For the lucky ones that don’t need contacts, your eyes can also feel dry so it can never hurt to bring some eye drops as well.

I always have a small bag with some toiletries in my carry on that I use to freshen up halfway the flight or/and before landing. In my bag I have a toothbrush, toothpaste, lip balm, face wipes, eye contact cleaning solution, a spare of contacts, deodorant, hand and face moisturizer. All 100ml/3.4oz or less of course.

Because of my ear troubles I also use these air pressure – regulating ear plugs, nose spray, tissues and take clarinase tablets.

And for the girls, you can always put some basic make up in there too because you never know who you will meet. Just kidding or am I?!

Entertainment
Check if all your electronics are fully charged. Seems logic but if you don’t use, lets say, your iPod often it can run low on battery. I just put my music on and I am gone.
If you don’t want to hear noises buy some good headphones. You will thank me some day.

Make sure you use the entertainment system when there is one. You can catch up on all your movies, listen to music or play a game. If you are on a budget flight you can always bring your iPad or laptop to watch some movies.
If you bring your laptop you can even do some work or clean up your pictures that you really need to take care of.
You can also read that book you always wanted to read but never had time for.

Food and drinks
Before going on the plane buy some water or soda. I know it’s better not to drink soda when flying but like me I don’t like drinking water. You can always ask the stewardess for something to drink but I prefer a bottle instead of a glass. I can just take a sip, put it away and go back to sleep.

Bring some easy healthy snacks on the plane. Plane food isn’t that great and personally I always get hungry halfway the flight. Please don’t bring anything that smells. You wouldn’t like that either.

Handige tips!

Gezellig!

Great tips! I always go for the aisle seat as I can’t sleep on planes and need to get up and walk around. Having fully charged batteries on your devices is a must especially if you’re too cheap to pay for movies, and snacks are so required!

Thank you and very true! It’s would drive me nuts if my batteries aren’t charged enough for the full flight! Thanks for the tip.
